Dr. George D. Lowe

Dr. George D. Lowe, a retired professor of sociology, died Wednesday, April 20, 2022 at his home in Lubbock, Texas.

He was born May 26, 1934, in Columbus, Georgia, a son of Frank Haddock Lowe and Lydia Belle Chapman Lowe. He was named for his paternal grandfather, George Lowe, a journalist and amateur botanist, who edited the Baxley News-Banner in the 40s. His paternal great-grandfather, John Lowe, a veteran of the Civil War, was a Methodist minister in the area.

Dr. Lowe grew up in Baxley and attended the Appling County Public Schools. He received his B.S. from the University of Georgia, his M.S. from Penn State, and his Ph.D. from Cornell. He taught at the University of Georgia and then at Texas Tech University, from which he retired in 2004.

He married Frances Davis, of Wyalusing, PA., in 1959. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict as a cryptographer at Ft. Meade, Md.

He is survived by his wife, Frances; by two daughters, Sarah Abernathie (with husband Kyle); and Laura Lowe; two grandsons, Connor Abernathie and Andrew Abernathie, all of Lubbock; a sister, Eula Irwin (with husband Robert) of Jacksonville, FL., nieces and nephews and their children.  His parents and a brother, Frank Jr., died before him.

Following cremation, Swain Funeral Home is managing the burial, which will be among his people at Omega Cemetery.
