John Edsel Murphy, age 86, of Baxley died Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at his residence.
Mr. Murphy was born November 22, 1928 in Appling County to the late John Edward Murphy and the late Lena Stanfield Murphy. Mr. Murphy was a member of Spring Branch Baptist Church and the Adult II Sunday School Class. Mr. Murphy was retired from Sinclair & Valentine Ink and the Appling County Board of Education and was also a member of the Holmesville Masonic Lodge #195 F & AM. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Sue Nell Warren, Lola Beecher, Doris Branch, & Darlene Lott and his brothers, Winton Murphy, Rozel Murphy, Orville Murphy, & Doyle Murphy.
Survivors include his wife, Genene Carter Murphy of Baxley; daughter, Debra (Tommy) Youmans of Baxley; sisters, Nettie (Clennie) Branch & Loretta (Frank) Miles both of Baxley and Roberta (Glenn) Thornton of Senoia, GA; grandchildren, John Robert (Lisa) Futch, Kelly (Shawn) Shipes, Justin (Jessica) Futch, & Julie (Evan) Weatherbee; nine great grandchildren; and several nieces & nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at Spring Branch Baptist Church with Rev. Bobby Brinkley, Rev. Bryan Gill, & Rev. Ben DeFore officiating. Interment will follow in the Carter Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.
Active pallbearers: John Robert Futch, Justin Futch, Eddie Miles, Willie Beecher, Rodney Carter, & Paul Fields.
Honorary Pallbearers: Staff of Affinis Hospice and all friends in attendance of the funeral service.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Spring Branch Baptist Church Building Fund (c/o Grady Branch 292 Miles Road Baxley, GA 31513) or a charity of the donor's choice.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
