Emmett (Mann) Carter

August 26, 1922 — January 9, 2016

Emmett (Mann) Carter, age 93, died Saturday, January 9, 2016 in the Appling County Healthcare System.


He was born August 26, 1922 in Baxley, Georgia to the late Jim Nep Carter and the late Emma Craven Carter and was raised by Emmett and Elizabeth Carter. He attended Spring Branch Baptist Church. Mr. Carter was a contractor for Georgia Power and was a WWII veteran. He was a member of the VFW Post 4472 and a member of the IBEW Union. He was a loving husband, best father and grandfather. He loved his family dearly along with his dogs and cats. Fishing was his favorite pastime. He was preceded in death by one step-son Vernon Rowell, thirteen brothers, and three sisters.


Survivors include his wife, Mary Carter of Baxley; two daughters, Diane Vickers of Westmoreland, Tenn. and Brenda (Stevie) Turner of Baxley; two sons James Noonie Carter, Emmett Rodney (Debbie) Carter both of Baxley; two step-sons Darrell (Marsha) Rowell of Mt. Vernon, GA and Bobby (Sandy) Rowell of Harker Heights, Texas; two sisters, Velma Dominy and Yvonne Deloach both of Baxley; one brother, James Edward Carter of Baxley; fourteen grandchildren, twenty eight great grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren; two special friends Doris Kersey and Latrell Lawrence both of Baxley.



Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Spring Branch Baptist Church with Rev. Bryan Gill, Rev. Robert Wiggley and Rev. Ben DeFore officiating.


Interment will follow in Carter Cemetery.


Active pallbearers are Brad Rowell, Shane Griffin, Roy Williamson, Ricky Carter, Brandon Carter, Andy Branch, Rodney Carter and Jared Fields.


Honorary Pallbearers will be Teresa Perry, Tracie Overstreet and all Comfort Care Hospice employees.


Visitation will be Monday, January 11, 2016 at Swain Funeral home from 6:00-8:00.


Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
