Etta Mae Herrington Herndon

November 12, 1926 — September 9, 2015

Mrs. Etta Mae Herndon, age 88, passed away on September 9, 2015 after an extended illness.

She was born in Appling County on November 12, 1926, graduated from Appling County High School and was retired from the Appling County School System.

Mrs. Herndon was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Curtis Herndon; her parents, Elmer & Edna Herrington; a sister, Hulda Pope; and a brother, J. D. Herrington.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Gary Cochran of Wetumpka, Alabama; two grandsons, Clifton (Brittany) Cochran of Surrency, Georgia and Charles (Molly) Cochran of Birmingham, Alabama; four sisters, Lunette (Donald) Hall of Baxley, Georgia, Marsha (Curtis) Morris of Callahan, Florida, Elaine Parker of Fernandina Beach, Florida, and Linda (Tot) Weatherly of Hazlehurst, Georgia; one brother, Kenneth (Ann) Herrington of Waycross, Georgia; and a host of nieces and nephews. Also surviving are special friends, Wanda Powell, Betty Carter, Gene & Beth Mann, Jimmy & Miriam Johnson, and Margaret Wilcox.

The Herndon family is especially appreciative of her recent caregivers: Ruby James, Ida Jones, and Flossie White. The family would also like to thank Dr. Pumpelly and the staff at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Dr. Graham and Dr. Martin and the staff at Appling Healthcare System and Angie Potts and the staff with Comfort Care Hospice.

Visitation will be held Saturday, September 12 from 10 AM to 11 AM at Swain Funeral Home. The funeral service will immediately follow at 11 AM in the Chapel of Swain Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers include her grandsons, Clif Cochran and Charles Cochran along with her nephews, Ricky Pope, Bryan Pope, Kelvin Morris, and Gene Mann.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Adult Sunday School Class of Memorial Free Will Baptist Church and members of the Appling County Retired Teachers Association.

Remembrances may be made to the Appling Healthcare System's Comfort Care Hospice Benevolence Fund in memory of Etta Mae Herndon.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
