James Edward "Ed" Bowers

March 23, 1923 — April 9, 2014

James Edward “Ed” Bowers, age 91, died Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at his residence.

Mr. Bowers was born March 23, 1923 in Wayne County and was the son of the late John McLaurin Bowers and the late Myrtice Mann Bowers. He was a member of Memorial Freewill Baptist Church. Mr. Bowers was a veteran of the United States Army having served in WWII and retired from ITT Rayonier. He enjoyed gardening and shared with everyone. Mr. Bowers was a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather and most of all a true Christian. He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Merle Bowers, son, John Edward Bowers and brother, Emory Bowers.

Survivors include his daughters, Lois B. (Mike) Sutton of St. Simons Island & Sherry B.(Glenn) Stone of Baxley; Sisters, Linda B. Barnette of Hanahan, SC and Cheryl B. Durbin of Devils Lake, ND; Brother in Law & Sisters in Law, Thomas & Ima Dean Herrin of Baxley, Frances Bowers of Elloree, SC and Betty Jean Herrin of Surrency; 6 grandchildren & 10 great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 11, 2014 at 3:00 P.M. from Memorial Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Karl Sexton, Rev. Darrell Quinn, Rev. R.M. Warren, Rev. Virgil Carter & Rev. Jonathan Mann officiating.

Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery with Military Honors.

Active Pallbearers are Josh Smith, Stone Bates, Brandon Dubberly, Bryan Weaver, Jeremy Bates and Logan Thomas.

Honorary Pallbearers are Dell Teppenpaw, Phyllis Williams, Euna Foskey, Ruby Joiner, Spanish Oaks Hospice, Dr. Errol & Denise Graham, Larry & Pam Aspinwall, Curt & Bobbie McMillan, Gene & Beth Mann, Terry & Beth Rentz, Herbert Rentz, Mitchell Bryant,Jerry & Charlotte Mann, Buddy Cain, Rodney & Hazle Herndon, Susan Quinn, James & Joan Carter, Hilda McCall, Wanda Powell, Rev. Ronnie Rentz and members of Memorial Freewill Baptist Church & Zand Murphy.

Visitation will be Thursday evening 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Swain Funeral Home.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
