James E. Payne, age 93, of Baxley died Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at his residence.
Mr. Payne was born November 16, 1920 in Hartwell, GA to the late David L. and Flora White Payne. Mr. Payne was a veteran of the United States Army Air Force having served in WWII. He was a 1941 graduate of the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture engineering. He retired as an area engineer with ASCS. Mr. Payne was a member of First Baptist Church Baxley and First Baptist Church in Jackson, Georgia where he served as a deacon. Mr. Payne was a member of the Kiwanis Club in Baxley and Jackson, GA for 67 years where he served in many capacities including Lt. Governor of Georgia's District 12. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha H. Payne, brothers, David, Jr., John, and Jackson Payne; and sister, Rachael Cordell.
Survivors include his daughter & son in law, Ellen & Cary Long of Baxley; Grandchildren, Marti (Leif) England of Baxley and Marc (Jena) Long of Kingsland; Great grandchildren, Carson England, Emma England and Andrew Long; 2 sisters, Clara Skelton of Homestead, Florida and Nora Kunz of Kirkwood, MO; 1 brother, Joe Payne of Jefferson; & a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, December 6, 2013 at 2:00 PM from the First Baptist Church with Rev. Dan Hughes, Rev. Keith Alderman and a Eulogy by Marc Long.
Interment will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Garden Cemetery in Alma.
Visitation will be one hour prior to funeral services at the church.
Active Pallbearers will be Leif England, Marc Long, Carson England, Alec Dalrymple, Cooper Dalrymple, Paul Moricz.
Honorary Pallbearers are Kiwanis Club of Baxley, Mr. Payne's Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church, Caregivers, Betty Copeland, Elaine Williams and Dr. & Mrs. Errol Graham.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund or the Baxley Kiwanis Club.
