Janice Rebecca Sellers, 60, of Baxley, died Friday, June 20, 2014, at her home.
She was born on July 7, 1953, to the late Lamar Sellers and the late Wynell Taylor Sellers. She was a lifelong member of Calvary Baptist Church in Appling County. She was a member of the 1971 graduating class of Appling County High School. She received her Bachelor's of Science degree in Special Education from Georgia Southern University in 1975. Following the earning of her first degree she completed three advanced degrees in Special Education, School Psychology, and Educational Leadership from Georgia Southern University. During her life she graced many occasions and church services through-out South Georgia with her beautiful voice and extraordinary piano skills. Ms. Sellers retired in 2007 as an educator in the Appling County School System. The positions she held over 30 years of service included classroom teacher, school psychologist, Director of Special Education, assistant principal at Appling County Primary School, and assistant superintendent and interim superintendent for the Appling County Board of Education. She also served as an assistant coach for eleven years for the Lady Pirates Basketball Team and assistant coach for 22 years for the Lady Pirates Softball Team. Ms. Sellers's coaching skills contributed to the Lady Pirates Softball Team's earning 405 wins, 12 regional championships, runner-up 5 years for the state girls' softball championships, and the capture of the state championship in 1999 and 2001.
Survivors include Kathy Warren, a lifelong friend; two brothers, Carlos Sellers and his wife Deloris, of Phoenix City, AL, and Larry Sellers and his wife, Mary, of Cleveland, GA; three nieces, Michelle (Danny) Green, of Baxley, Tammy Sellers of Ludowici, and Delaninia (Eric) Ranstead, of Montgomery, AL; a maternal aunt, Helen T. Dubberly of Savannah; step-nieces & nephews, Donna (Keith) Ayers, Dale (Kathy) Atkins, David (Debbie) Atkins, Chris (Lorie) Sellers, & Timmy (Brokke) Hipps; and several great-nieces, great nephews, and cousins also survive.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, June 22, 2014 at 3:00PM in the chapel of Swain Funeral Home. The Reverend Roger LaRoche and Bishop Randy Sellers officiated and eulogies were given by Chris Taylor, Sheila Tillman, & Lee Johnson. Musical selections were performed by the pianist David Williams and the vocalists Jennifer Akin, Rena Grunieson, and Kathy Cook.
Interment followed in the Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Samuel Green, Gabriel Green, Jeremy Johnson, E. J. Ranstead, Eric Ranstead, Brad Tillman, Jimmy Warren, and Matthew Warren.
Honorary pallbearers were former Lady Pirate Basketball and Softball Players.
In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 214 W. River Road Baxley, GA 31513.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
