Jesse Fred Smith

October 16, 1919 — September 12, 2013

Swain Funeral Home announces the death of Jesse Fred Smith, age 93. He was a veteran of the Army Air Corp in World War II and the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict, passed away on September 12, 2013, after a lengthy illness.


Fred is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Eversia Rogers Smith, daughter Jill (Harry) Dasher of Baxley, Cheryl (Dickie) Tillman of Loganville, and Connie Smith of Young Harris, four grandchildren, Eric (Kelly) Dasher of Seattle, WA, Jeff (Stacy) Dasher of Petaluma, CA, Erin (Alex) Flynt of Hattiesburg, MS and Lee Tillman of Marietta, GA, and three great-grandchildren, Shane and James Dasher and Eli Flynt. Also surviving are sisters, Mary Jackson and Mae Smith of Bremen, GA, Nora Lee Amos of Darien, GA, and one brother, Leroy Smith of Clearwater, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred Goodrich and Nora Cason Smith, sister, Mina Aspinwall and brother, Walter Smith.
Fred was born on October 16, 1919 in Sumner, GA. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Baxley, GA. He retired in 1987 from Chevron Oil Company, having been one of the operators of Smith-Lewis Chevron Bulk Oil. He was a life member of the VFW and enjoyed fishing on the Altamaha River.


Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. at Swain's Funeral Home prior to the funeral service.


Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 16, 2013, at Swain's Funeral Home with Rev. Thad Harvey and Rev. Mike Redwine officiating.


Active pallbearers are Alvin Tuten, Wink Branch, John Branch, Jimmy Johnson,Jimmy Stipe,and Bruce Carson.


Honorary pallbearers All family and friends in attendance, Sharon Miller, Emma Branch and The Pavilion Staff; Errol Graham, MD. Interment will be at Memorial Gardens, Baxley, GA.


Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
