John William Aycock

John W. Aycock, age 95, of Baxley passed away Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at his residence under the care of Regency Southern Care Hospice.

Mr. Aycock was born February 4, 1928 in Appling County and was a veteran of the United States Navy. He attended Midway Baptist Church and was a member of the Men’s Sunday School Class and was also a member of the Holmesville Masonic Lodge.  He had many special achievements in his 54 years in steel erection. He served as superintendent on the bridge across the Americas-Panama Canal, joining North & South America, as well as many other bridges and buildings across North America, the building of the replica of the Saturn 5 Rocket, and the static test stand for the Saturn 5 Rocket.

He was preceded in death by his parents R. N. “Dock” Aycock and Mollie Soloman Aycock, and all ten of his siblings, Vernon Aycock, Vertie (Bryce) Rainwater, Vance Aycock, George (Myrtle) Aycock, Nettie (Walt) Campbell, Calvin (Dodie) Aycock, Pansy Myers, Eugene Aycock, Richard Aycock and Clara Aycock; his wife of 54 years, Opal L. Aycock, son-in-law, Ira Caldwell, and a special grandchild, Zee Sellers.

Survivors include his loving wife of 15 years, Lillian Sellers Aycock of Baxley; children, Steve (Judy) Aycock of Baxley, Joan (Keith) Dyal of Baxley, Janice (Therman “Pet”) Hayes of Hazlehurst, Bela Sellers Caldwell of Baxley, and Darrell (Dale) Sellers of Baxley.  Nine grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 2PM in the Chapel of Swain Funeral Home with Rev. Rick Brown, and Rev. Therman Hayes officiating.  Interment will follow in Holland Cemetery with Military Honors.

Active pallbearers will be Doc Hayes, Floyd Eason, Darrell Sellers, Chris Aycock, Caleb Hayes, Zach Eason, and Keith Dyal.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Midway Baptist Church Men’s Sunday School Class, staff of Regency Hospice, Billy & Patricia O’Berry, James McDaniel, JoAnn Beecher, Gene & Ola Faye Turner, Jean Dyal, Ed Holland, Bobbie Beecher, Helen Jones, Kevin Watson, Ken Erickson, Robby Cole, Casey Cole, and Glenn & Linda Aycock.

Visitation will be Friday, December 8, 2023 in the Chapel of Swain Funeral Home from 6PM until 8PM.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
