John Elbert Tillman

October 28, 1930 — February 19, 2016

John Elbert Tillman, age 85, of Surrency died Friday, February 19, 2016.


Mr. Tillman was born October 28, 1930 to the late Elbert Lowe Tillman and the late Nora Harrell Tillman. He attended Surrency Freewill Baptist Church, served as Surrency City Councilman, Mayor of Surrency, Appling Healthcare Board of Directors for 12 years, Baxley State Bank Board of Directors, Community Bank Board of Directors, S E Cotton Gin Board of Directors, Sun Trust Bank Board of Directors, Appling County Industrial Authority Board, Appling County Commisioners for 22 years, and Appling County Stockman's Association. He also served proudly in the United States Army. Mr. Tillman was preceded in death by his sister Doris Tillman Wildes.


Mr. Tillman is survived by his wife, Dartha Dixon Tillman, three sons; John Alan (Christina) Tillman, Anthony (Tonya) Tillman both of Surrency, GA and Christopher (Anna) Tillman of St. Simons Island, GA, three grandchildren; Matthew Tillman of Valdosta, GA, Megan Tillman of Statesboro, GA, and Sam Tillman of St. Simons Island, GA, one great grandchild Aiden Tillman of Valdosta, GA. two step grandchildren; Nick Dyksta and Crystal Boatright and six step great grandchildren.


Funeral services will be held Monday, February 22, 2016 at the First Assembly of God at 11:00 AM with Rev. Rick Brown, Rev. Virgil Carter, and Rev. Ronnie Rentz officiating.


Visitation will be held Monday, February 22, 2016 from 10:00-11:00 AM at First Assembly of God.


Interment will follow in Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery.


Active pallbearers are Eric Wildes, Jeff Doke, Wayne Doke, Greg Doke, Sidney Wildes, Jr., Matthew Tillman and Nick Dykstra.


In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made to a charity of choice.
