Hazlehurst

Mary Ellen O’Berry, age 83, of Hazlehurst passed away on Wednesday, September 18, 2024 at Memorial Health in Savannah.

Mrs. O’Berry was born March 6, 1941 in Appling County to the late Vernon LeRoy Stone and the late Jessie Brown Yawn Stone. She was a member of Lumber City Church of God and was a loving mother and wonderful grandmother. Mrs. O’Berry was a home interior decorator and loved flowers and working outdoors in her yard and watching hummingbirds. She retired from Alco Controls as a Quality Control Inspector. Mrs. O’Berry was preceded in death by her husbands, Buddy Carter, Jack “PePaw” Kennedy & Jim O’Berry; daughter-in-law, Peggy Carter; brothers, Vernon “Bo” Stone, Eugene Stone and Steve Stone. 

Survivors include her daughter, Diane (Steve) Boyett of Hazlehurst; sons, Keith (Tina) Carter of Hazlehurst and Brad Carter of Alma; sister, Linda Stone of Hazlehurst; brother, G. W. (Tommie Jean) Stone of Tifton; sisters-in-law, Genie Stone of Baxley and Liz Stone of Hazlehurst; aunt, Vivian Stone of Hazlehurst. Twelve grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive. 

Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 22, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Swain Funeral Home with Rev. David Deen, Rev. Josh Carter and Rev. Joey Andrews officiating.

Interment will follow in Oak View Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Jeffrey Jarrell, Wayne Stone, Matt Carter, Jeremy Carter, Troy Stone, Jameson Rowland and Carter Yawn.

The visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Swain Funeral Home.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
