Oliver Eugene Bates, age 65. of Baxley died Friday, September 13, 2013 at Commiunity Hospice in Vidalia.
Funeral services will be Monday, September 15, 2013, at 4:00 at Christ Community Church. The body will be lie in state one hour prior to the funeral hour.
Interment will follow in the Oak Hill Free Will Baptist Cemetery in Bacon Co.
Rev. Dannie Hix, Rev. Brad Park, and Rev. Rick Brown will officiate.

Survivors are: his wife - Sharon Simmons of Baxley; one daughter - Rochelle (Scott) Taylor of Baxley; one son - Jeremy (Latara) Bates of Baxley; one step son - Chris (Julie) Simmons of Hazlehurst, GA; one sister - Brenda Colter of Baxley ; four grandchildren - Stone Bates, Trevor, Toby, and Lindy Lee Taylor and a host of nieces and nephews.
Biographical Information: Mr. Bates was born October 19, 1947, to the late Oliver and Geneva Bates. He is also preceded in death by his wife, Linda Smart Bates. He was a lifelong resident of Appling County and was a member of Christ Community Church. He proudly served our country in the United States Army and was retired from A Southern Company.
Visitation: Sunday, September 15, 2013 6:00 to 8:00 at Swain Funeral Home.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
