Steve Smith

Steve Smith, age 68, of Baxley passed away Saturday, December 9, 2023 at Augusta University Medical Center after a brief illness.

“Stevie” was born January 23, 1955 in Waycross, Georgia to the late Joe & Nola Smith. An avid cattleman, he spent the majority of his life in the stockyards, on the roads hauling cattle, or in any of his friends or neighbors cow pens being the true “cowman” he was and working cows. He was an auctioneer and loved any opportunity he was given to chant – whether it be in a livestock ring or on a small stage, his passion for his work shown clearly. Steve was a member of the Appling County Young Farmers, Georgia Young Farmers, Piney Woods Cattlemen’s Association, Southeast Georgia Cattlemen’s Association, Georgia Cattlemen’s Association, and Appling County Stockman’s Association. He was currently employed with Turner County Stockyards as an auctioneer and clerk. Stevie was a member of Red Oak Baptist church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joe & Nola Smith.

Survivors include his wife: Donna Smith of Baxley, daughters and sons-in-law: Rebecca & Josh Gardner, and Katlyn & Kevin Thompson all of Baxley, a step-son: Michael & Tabitha Thomas of Jefferson, a brother: Andy & Carolyn Smith, of Baxley, seven grandsons: Cooper & Lincoln Gardner, Kixton & Kaden Thompson, Levi, Connor, & Landon Thomas. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at 3:00 pm from Red Oak Baptist Church with the Rev. Robbie Gill, Rev. Monroe Gill, and Rev. Rick Brown officiating. Musical selections will be rendered by Elaine Edwards and David Williams.

Visitation will be Monday, December 11, 2023 at Red Oak Baptist Church from 6:00 – 8:00pm.

Honorary Pallbearers: Allen & Denise Ahl, Lamar & Kenna Thompson, employees of Turner County Stockyard, and past employees of S&D Goat Sales.
