Thelma Yawn Herndon

Thelma Yawn Herndon, age 78, of Surrency died Thursday, April 28, 2016 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah.

Mrs. Herndon was born November 29, 1937 in Appling Co. to the late George Clinton Yawn and the late Georgia Mae Cater Yawn. She was a member of Zion Church of God and was the owner and operator of EZ Mart.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Herndon was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip "Dupe" Herndon, grandchildren, Stacey Carter, Chris Turner, & Penny Turner; and great grandchildren, Baylee Brewer and Jacob Forehand.

Survivors include her daughters, Joyce (Ronnie) Turner of Baxley, Jane Morris of Surrency, and Janet (Curtis) Forehand of Baxley; sisters, Wynette Yates of Tallahassee, FL, Udine Varnadore of St. Petersburg, FL, Judy Williams of Surrency, Linda Cook of Uvalda, Gwen Turner and Donna Miles both of Baxley; brothers, Randy Yawn of Baxley and Royce Yawn of Bristol. Six grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 1, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. at Zion Church of God with Pastors Stephen Statum and Tony Forehand officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Herndon will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.

Active pallbearers will be her grandsons: Bradley Carter, Mitchell Carter, Tony Forehand, Jeremy Forehand, Kelly Turner, Austin Brewer, Gabriel Carter, & Brock Carter.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Adult Sunday School Class of Zion Church of God.

Visitation will be Saturday evening, 6-8 p.m., at Swain Funeral Home.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
